Situated a mere 25 minutes from Reno, Mt. Rose offers visitors the closest skiing and snowboarding facility to the big city. Reno has more than 9,000 hotel rooms and a variety of luxury casino properties with some of the best amenities in the country. The ski resort features eight ski lifts and more than 60 ski trails on its 1,200-acre lot. About 40 percent of the ski trails are for advanced skiers, so keep this in mind when planning your trip with little ones.
Diamond Peak Ski Resort
Diamond Peak Ski Resort is another must-see winter vacation destination in Reno. Like the Mt. Rose Ski Resort, this resort is only a 25 minute driving distance from Reno. According to its website, the Diamond Peak Ski Resort begins in December and runs through April. There are approximately six ski lifts and 30 trails (this includes cross-country and trails through forested areas).
Steamboat Springs, CO
Steamboat Springs is known for its deep Western heritage and Winter Olympic history, and has become one of the most well-known ski towns in all of North America. While the city was named after its famous hot springs, Steamboat Springs is the perfect place to go to get your winter slopes on. This unique Colorado town is surrounded by working ranches and ecompasses 2,965 acres of terrain across an impressive range of mountains. The Steamboat Ski Resort has a total of 18 ski lifts and 165 trails, making it easy to find a slope for beginner and experienced ski bunnies alike.

- Killington Peak – this is the highest mountain peak at the ski resort and it includes a “canyon area” near the top. There are several black diamond trails like Cascade, Downdraft, and the Big Dipper.
- Sunrise Mountain – this mountain is only serviced by one lift and it features all beginner terrain.
- Snowdon Mountain – this peak is ideal for the whole family as it includes beginner, intermediate, and expert trails to enjoy.
While most people don’t think of the South when they plan winter vacations, Gatlinburg, Tennessee is an ideal ski town. Situated next to the Smoky Mountains, many people visit the Ober Gatlinburg ski resort that opens in early December and closes in mid-March. This ski resort features eight trails from the 3,300-foot summit of Mt. Harrison (perfect for intermediate and beginner skiers).
